For many of us, school is starting back up some time in the next two to four weeks. That means it’s time to employ some back-to-school strategies, especially if you’re also managing a chronic illness. Read on for our tips on managing the back-to-school madness.
#1: Start Early
There are a lot of things you can start ahead of time, like make-ahead or freezer-friendly school lunches or setting up a command station for kids to drop off school bags, charge laptops, and place important papers. Waiting until the last minute to do these tasks puts you at risk of being sidelined by a flare-up. And that means a stressful start to the school year for you and your kids (which can in turn lead to more flare-ups).
Make yourself a list of everything you’d like to have done before Day 1. Then try to do one thing every day.
#2: Use Online Resources for Back-to-School Shopping
If your school has online supply ordering, it can be a great resource. And even if yours doesn’t, you can shop online for a lot of things. Kids can help pick out supplies and clothes online. And as an added bonus, kids love getting mail! So skip the crowds, and do what you can online.
#3: Enlist Help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Get your kids to help with lunch prep, or get a friend to help you put together that new desk. You don’t have to do everything alone. Besides, getting your kids to help gives them a sense of responsibility and teaches them independence. And working with friends to accomplish a task makes it more fun and a less of a chore.
#4: Set Expectations
Finally, remember the transition back to school is a big one for kids too. Setting bedtime and homework time expectations a few weeks in advance can help make the transition easier.
