Holiday to-do lists can be intimidating for anyone, especially if you deal with a chronic illness. In today’s post, you’ll find strategies to help you create a plan to check off your holiday to-dos.
#1: Be Realistic
This is good advice whether or not you have a chronic illness. There can be a lot of pressure to do anything and everything around the holidays. Between holiday outings, baking, shopping, gift wrapping and decorating, it’s easy to lose momentum.
Spend some time focusing on which parts of the holiday really mean something to you. Then build your to do list around those parts, and forget about the rest.
#2: Enlist Holiday Help
Whether you hire out household chores or enlist a friend to help with wrapping, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Putting every single agenda item on your shoulders is just asking for failure, or worse, a flare-up. Ask family members to commit to tasks, call in favors to friends, or hire services to help you get things done.
#3: It’s OK to Say No
The holiday season is full of parties and get-togethers. While it can be a joyous time seeing friends, you don’t have to say yes to every single invitation. Make sure you save your energy and time for the people and events that matter most.
#4: Take Shortcuts
There’s no shame in taking the easy road from time to time. Whether that means net lights on your bushes instead of string lights or all gift bags instead of wrapping presents, use the tools you have at your disposal!
#5: Take Time For Yourself
Self-care is a vital part of life, but it’s one we often neglect. Make sure you include time for rest and relaxation on your to do list. Need some ideas?
- Order pizza for a holiday movie night.
- Schedule yoga on your calendar.
- Make sure you get 7-8 hours of sleep.
- Take your medications.
- Eat healthy, wholesome foods.
Self-care needs to be a top priority.
